Masculine Home Office Design
Hey there, welcome to Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design! If you are new around here, my name is Kristin, I’m a Mama of three, and I’ve been an interior designer for about 14 years now. And I’ve been used to working from home virtually for nearly five years now, doing Online Interior Design exclusively. Sometimes from my Home Office, and sometimes from bed, and almost always in a messy bun with bare feet. 😉
And today I want to share a Home Office design, but it is also hopefully a happy compromise between wife and husband, let me explain…
I’ve worked with this amazing client on several different rooms of her house, so I was thrilled when she reached out for some help with her husband’s Home Office.
TEAM WIFE: In her perfect world, it would be a beautiful, neutral Home Office design that would work with the rest of their home’s design (it has glass French doors and is right off their main living area).
TEAM HUSBAND: He is a huge sports fan, and especially loves the Philadelphia Eagles. In his perfect world, Eagles gear, and a football theme would be everywhere.
So how do you combine her Wish List and his Wish List into one happy Home Office design? I hope this design is the perfect solution to get everyone happy and loving the space!
Home Office Design Must Haves
For all of my Interior E-Design clients I have an entire Design Questionnaire for them to fill out, so I can really get to know what they want and need from their room design. And her husband had a couple of requests, which I fully agree with:
CHOOSING THE RIGHT DESK
Do you just need a space for a computer but not much storage? File cabinet storage? Something glam? Something traditional?
This is the most practical part of your entire Home Office, so really think through what you NEED to have, THEN start looking for something that also looks great. She wanted a modern look, and he wanted an “executive style” desk, so I found quite a few options for them (scroll down to see the “Home Office Combos”), but I finally chose this masculine but modern Crate and Barrel executive desk (#2)
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CHAIR
And the second most important thing? A comfortable chair! Do you need wheels? Something small and sleek? Something big and comfy?
The husband is a tall guy, so we wanted to make sure to find a big chair that would be comfortable. I loved this caramel colored leather option (#5)
WHAT OFFICE FUNCTIONS DO YOU NEED?
A Home Office could be one of the most “function driven” spaces in your house. So think about what types of things you need to make your office design work for you. File cabinets? Tall storage? Working space for multiple people? Bulletin boards? A seating area?
My client mentioned that the whole family occasionally uses the office, so I suggested taking out a piece of furniture and instead include this armchair (#9) which can be a reading chair, or a place for another family member. This masculine charcoal plaid pillow (#3) adds some texture. A modern navy plaid rug (#6) helps tie everything together.
MAN VS. WIFE: HOW TO DECORATE?
And now we get to the struggle…how can we get both the wife and husband what they want? Since it mostly is his office, I really did want to find art to fit his hobbies. So I hopped onto Etsy to find these football themed prints (#10-#14) and was able to find two pieces especially dedicated to the Eagles-including their stadium print (#12). Yet, I’m hoping they are neutral and sophisticated enough for his wife to be happy as well.
He also had a few different Eagles photos he wanted to use. So we did! But we dressed them up with new matted frames (which I think makes everything look better!)
OPEN SHELF STYLING
My client also had an entire wall of open shelves, so I helped them choose a mix of decorative and functional items (such as these #9 storage bins) to fill up these shelves!
Home Office Desk: Desk + Chair Combos
I had mentioned above that I had a hard time narrowing down my final desk recommendation for this masculine Home Office design. So as a bonus, I created a desk + chair combo, as well as some additional rug and artwork options. My clients can mix and match any of these into their design.
Home Office Floor Plan
I always create a Floor Plan for all of my clients to help show them the layout of their new room. In this case I also created some Elevation drawings to show my clients how to style their shelves and how to exactly hang their artwork (not shown). It is like a step-by-step template to easily follow.
