Feeling Flighty? An Outer Space Kid Bedroom Design
My name is Kristin, and I’m a kid room design addict. 🙂 But in all seriousness, I’m a Mama to three (two girls and a boy) so kid room designs are hands down my favorite. Kid Bedroom Design, Nursery Design, Playroom Design, Bonus Room Design…BRING.IT.ON.
And today is all about the Outer Space Kid Bedroom Design.
(P.S. My blog is chock full of Kid Room Designs if you are looking for ideas!)
So I was thrilled when this Mom reached out for help with her five year old son’s bedroom design. He requested a space theme. She requested a full sized bed. And the rest…that is where the fun came in!
A Space Theme Kid Bedoom Design
I could not have been more excited when the Mom shared the theme with me…her son wanted all things outer space in his new “big boy” bedroom! But here is the thing with kids…they change their minds. So even though this bedroom design is 100% planets, stars, and space travel, I have a secret…and I want to share it with you.
5 Secrets for Designing a Themed Kid Bedroom
Like I mentioned above…kids grow and change, and their tastes and interests change with them. Today it is outer space, next year it could be firetrucks. So how do you create a Kid Room design without wasting money and time? Read on…
1.Bring in the theme in artwork. Nearly all of the “space” theme is in this adorable, fun (slightly retro modern) outer space artwork. I found it all on Etsy (my fav source for artwork), that are digital downloads, so they can be printed to any size. Invest in a series of nice frames…and you can easily swap out the artwork for a full new theme in the future. Just swap out the artwork and its a brand new room!
2. Invest in great quality bedroom furniture. Go neutral and go high quality with the bedroom furniture. A desk, dresser, bed, and nightstands can last a child from toddlers to teens. So choose a nice look (and consider small updates like changing out hardware) in the future. My daughter still has the same dresser we used as a changing table for her…a decade later.
3. Get fun with bedding! I tend not to go too “theme-y” (is that a word?) with bedding. Maybe a set of inexpensive sheets, or a fun throw pillow. Otherwise I stick with neutrals that can easily swap to a different theme. However-let’s be honest. Your kiddo isn’t going to keep their sheets for a decade. So this is a fun place to add some color and pattern (Target’s Pillowfort line is one of my favorites!)
4. Add in a desk. Even if you have a little one, they can use their desk for playing, building Lego creations, arts and crafts, etc. Then they can grow into it as they start school. I gravitate to a desk with tons of drawers (to stash their junk…errr treasuress). I 100% recommend always using a desk protector on top. Trust me.
5. Use multiple types of storage. This desk has drawers. We used small baskets for the open bookcase. A bookcases stores books. And even the dresser can be used as double duty. Yes, they are great for clothes, but they are one of my favorite ways to stash kid toys (easy access that is fairly easy to organize.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun: A Girl Playroom Design
This Mom wanted a fun, modern look and her daughter loves all things green, pink and gold. Like a lot of Playroom designs, this one had to fit in a lot of function: a desk, a play area, a reading nook, and lots of toy storage.
Double the Trouble: A Girl Playroom Design for Twins
And one more fun girly girl Playroom to show you! This one had to be neutral because it was right off the Foyer of the house so EVERYONE could see it. Yet it still had to be fun and functional for two sweet little girls.
So go off and embrace your child like side…and have a ton of fun doing it!
Cheers,
