Girl Bedroom Ideas: A Makeover Reveal
Welcome back to Part II of this sweet little girl’s Bedroom Makeover! Earlier this week I shared Part I of this bedroom makeover. These Texas parents contacted me earlier this spring to help them design their three-year-old daughter’s bedroom via Online Interior Design. They chose my Starter Package which included two different bedroom designs, made to mix-and-match with each other. After designing their daughter’s bedroom I sent them their Postbox (or room-inside-a-box) with all of the drawings, floor plans, material samples, shopping lists, and instructions of how to pull together their daughter’s room. Once they had their Postbox they could create their daughter’s bedroom on their time schedule and budget. And they so graciously are allowing me to share the whole process of the makeover with you today!
The “Before” and “After”
Here is their daughter’s room before and after their bedroom makeover:
I don’t know about you, but I am totally in love with it! It is sweet and adorable but has enough vintage inspired elements that it isn’t too cutesy or theme-y. Instead it is a room their daughter can grow into for years to come. If you missed Part I of this makeover you can check it all out here:

You can read more about the project and see ALL of the different versions so you can grab some ideas for your own daughter’s bedroom or nursery design!
My clients ended up mixing both Version #1 (you can see that in the above link) and Version #2 (see below) for their perfect daughter’s bedroom design:
Girl Bedroom Ideas: How to Create a Timeless Bedroom
And today I finally get to walk you through the whole project! The parents requested a little hint of Texas in the wall art of their daughter’s bedroom since they were raising a Texas girl. And I think this sweet floral piece is the focal point of the whole room. To add some whimsy to her bedroom, I suggested to add two yarn tassel garlands over the print. Not only does it add some charm, but creates a piece that works with the scale of the bed. You can find this sweet little print from the Etsy shop Gray Frames. For a more modern look, you could use a gold or silver frame, but this rustic wood frame is the perfect touch in this bedroom makeover.
If you want to make your own DIY tassel garland, you can check out this tutorial of a garland I created for my very own kid’s Playroom:

Girl Bedroom Ideas: Girl Bedding
I’m a Mama of three kiddos, now 6, 8, and 10. Which means I have potty trained and sleep trained three kids. I have caught them sneaking cookies into bed, I have also had one (who shall remain nameless) who colored her sheets one morning while I was in the kitchen.
So….My #1 piece of advice for kid’s bedding?
Choose kid bedding that is inexpensive and easy to wash, because it is going to go through a lot-potty accidents, sickness, even a marker mishap like my own kiddo. And be washed often! So while this sweet scalloped pink quilt looks like an antique, it is actually a $60 quilt from Target. Then we paired it up with an inexpensive blue throw (to add some texture to the bedding) and inexpensive dot sheets. I love Target’s Pillowfort line for bedding for kids. Then we added some pop and texture with this sole throw pillow from the Etsy shop Mill Brook Co. Its muted colors but fun pattern (little colorful tassels) works perfectly in this serene bedroom space. Since it is a pillow cover, it can also be taken off and washed.
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Girl Bedroom Furniture
I always recommend choosing the best quality kid’s furniture your budget allows. I also recommend using neutral, classic pieces-these will be pieces that will grow with your child. So for this girl’s bedroom makeover all of the main furniture selections came from sources such as Pottery Barn Kids and Crate and Kids (formally Land of Nod). This Jenny Lind white bed from Crate and Kids is a classic piece-she has been around forever and will be just as beautiful a decade from now! Similarly, we chose a quality white dresser and is neutral and classic enough to go with just about any style. That way if she wants a different look for her bedroom when she is larger, her furniture will still work.
And I hate using matching bedroom sets, so we broke it up with this bleached wood Pottery Barn kids nightstand. This nightstand has both a drawer and room for a basket for plenty of storage. Double bonus. And with kid bedrooms, nurseries, and playrooms I like to choose inexpensive decor pieces. This pink lamp is a budget friendly gem from Target, so no one will cry if it breaks.
Girl Bedroom Makeover from Start to Finish
And here it is: from Design Mood Board to Girl Bedroom Makeover Reveal:
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Add a Play Table
It is barely showing in the photo above, but we left enough room to add in a sweet gray play table and set of two chairs (see Item #15 in the above Mood Board). It will give her the perfect place to have tea parties, teach her teddy bears, and even work on some crafts. This little sweetie pie is never going to want to leave her new bedroom!
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Create a Gallery Wall
In Version #2 of this girl’s bedroom design, I suggested created a girly-meets-rustic Gallery Wall over the dresser. For my clients I created a list of items, along with links, sizes, prices, and frames to use, for their daughter’s Gallery Wall. I also created this to-scale Elevation drawing so my client’s could have a step-by-step template how to re-create this Wall Gallery from the comfort of their home:
And here is her Gallery Wall in real life.
Is that not the cutest? It is made up of inexpensive artwork from Etsy, and wall decor items from places like Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Create a Timeless Theme
One of the hardest decision when creating a girl’s bedroom design: what theme or style to start with? I always suggest not going too “theme-y” or childish with your child’s bedroom. Instead, choose some classic large pieces, then sprinkle in some decor items that loosely carry a theme or style. In this case, the parents wanted a touch of rustic, a touch of vintage, while still being girly and sweet. They completely had the right idea of wanting a subtle, sweet design.
So while we added in rustic touches that hinted at their Texas roots: the wall hanging, the rustic monogram plaque, the Texas print: none of it was over the top.
They also wanted some vintage charm, so we used a soft pink vintage STYLE quilt, and an antique LOOKING Jenny Lind bed.
And for the walls, they went with a barely-there soft blue that kept the bedroom looking soft and serene.
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Create Your Own Bedroom Gallery Wall
I love how the Gallery Wall pulls in some of the colors from the bedding and the artwork over the bed, such as pinks, turquoises, and golds:
Girl Bedroom Ideas: Decorating with Books
I am loving this new trend of using book ledges (a narrow shelf with a small lip on the front) in kid’s bedroom, nursery, and playroom designs. Think about your kiddos’ existing books: they are colorful, fun, and usually have some smile-inducing artwork on the front. What is a better way to decorate the walls of a little girl’s bedroom than with colorful books? And I love what her parents did-they added in some sweet family photos and a stuffed unicorn in with the mix.
You can either select some books for the covers, or use books and items you already own. These book ledges are typically just an inch or two wide, so look for narrow items. Underneath her book ledge, we added a Pottery Barn Kids open bookshelf for extra book and toy storage.
