Shared Girl’s Playroom Design
Oh my goodness, this project got me right in my Mama-of-girls heart. I’m the proud Mom to three kids: two daughters and a son. And I’ll admit, working on Kid Rooms is by far my favorite project to work on. And there is something about working on a room for little girls that brings out the little girl inside of ME! I was 10 years old when I first wanted to makeover my childhood bedroom from the chintz wallpaper my Mom chose, to a “big girl” room. And I guess I never stopped designing from there.
So welcome to Postbox Designs, I’m Kristin! This is where I work exclusively with Interior E-Design, and I like to say I design “Real Rooms for Real Life”. Today I want to share this cute-as-a-button shared Girl’s Playroom Design. But behind all of the cute, bright colors are also durable and practical items that will last. Plus we managed to incorporate a LOT of different functions into this single room, with tons of different storage ideas. Because while the girls are playing in there, Mom also has to make sure it is going to last.
A Bright & Colorful Girl Playroom Design
I can hardly take how cute this little Playroom turned out! I had worked with this California Mama in the past on some other room of her home. You can see her Modern Farmhouse Living Room, Dining Room & Bedroom Makeover here. So I was thrilled when she reached back out to me to work on converting a kid’s bedroom into a shared Playroom for her girls.
Girl Playroom Wall Decor
And if your eye is drawn right to this menagerie of these playroom animal heads…mine was too! We created a whole wall decor grouping of these sweet stuffed animal wall decor heads, and they are all budget friendly finds from Target’s Pillowfort line! P.S. They also have more gender neutral ones as well. You can see an example of how another designer used these animal heads on Image #31.
Playroom Activity & Craft Table
Then we also got practical and gave these sweet girls at lot of different areas to play in their brand new Playroom. We started with these Target mint green metal chairs (#8) and adjustable Crate and Kids activity table (#12). These metal chairs are light-weight, easy to move, and simple to wipe down with spills. They are about the closest thing to bomb proof I have found for a kid space. And I love Crate and Barrel’s adjustable table-you can get several different leg heights to move the table as they grow.
Playroom Reading Corner
And what Playroom design isn’t complete without a reading nook? To make it extra special and magical, we used this Target pink ombre canopy (#11) and put this fuzzy faux fur pink rug (#7) inside it for an extra soft place to sit. Plus, they can use this “sparkle” pillow (#10) for an extra cushion. There are a couple of ways you can keep books nearby so kids can easily grab them. You can use a standard bookshelf, a cubby storage system like we did (#30), book ledges, or you can do what we do in my house. I got sick and tired of putting books back on the shelf, so I grabbed a giant metal floor bin and we just put our books in there. It isn’t the most organized, but it is super easy to pick up and put away books. And every now and then I’ll switch out the books in there for new reads.
Playroom TV & Movie Area
Mom also needed to include a TV in this Playroom design, because the girls can snuggle up to watch movies in this room too. To make TV watching extra fun and comfy, we used this Pottery Barn Kids star rug (#24) and these so-cute-I-can-hardly-stand-it UNICORN bean bags (#14). We used one for each girl so they would have their own seating…my 7 year old might trade her candy stash for one of these! Mom also had an existing dresser (#29) that she wanted incorporated in this space. I think dressers are great storage pieces as drawers usually stay more organized than doors, plus you can use the top drawers to stash TV remotes or DVDs inside.
I gave her an option to bling it up with these gold and pearl cabinet knobs (#25) to give a more feminine look to her existing dresser. This is a quick fix to give any piece of furniture a new look.
Playroom Wall Decor + Artwork
For this Playroom design, I included fun, sweet pieces that are also budget friendly, because they are digital download prints from Etsy. Items #26 and #27 add some fun charm into this girls only Playroom space. But, Mom also wanted a place where the girls can display their OWN artwork, to make this Playroom design their own. I suggested this simple artwork display kit from Pottery Barn Kids (#28)-and use one for each girl. That way the Playroom can have an ever rotating art display, and will (hopefully) cut down on fighting over who gets to show off what artwork!
Playroom Decor Ideas that are Practical Too
When you are designing a Playroom or Kid’s Room…have fun with it! You can add fun, whimsical things you could never use in a grown up room. Simple finds like this Target teal lamp (#21) is made of wood so it is going to be more durable if it falls.
One of my favorite toy storage tricks that I use in my own home…laundry baskets! These are perfect for odd-shaped toys and stuffed animals, just throw them in there and make room for smaller toys in your baskets or cubbies. And even toddlers can throw their toys into one of these.
Cubby Storage (#30)-this is a simple way to store toys and books, but it works really well. Just fill with inexpensive canvas bins, and kids can easily pull them in and out. My suggestion…don’t over-organize it Mom…you’ll be the only one doing so!
My client wanted a fun pop of pattern, so we decided to go with wallpaper on one wall. I gave her two different options (#13 and #33). But the reason this is practical is because it is REMOVABLE and it is PEEL AND STICK. No big mess, no pro needed, and you can easily take it down if you want a new look. Big impact for those not ready to commit.
