Coastal Shared Kid Bedroom Reveal!
My Airbnb Lakehouse Makeover Week 5: Shared Kid Bedroom Reveal
Hi friend, thanks so much for stopping by! My name is Kristin, I’m the owner of Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design, and normally I’m sharing client projects from all over the country. But for the last month I’ve been sharing something different around here…a peek into my own home! If this your first time here, you are jumping in right in the middle of a 6 Week long Makeover! So I’ll give you a bit of background: about two years ago my family bought a 1200 SF Lakehouse, about 35 minutes away from our home. I live in Michigan, and the summer is all about being near the water (that is why we all stick around during the winter months). So we were thrilled when we found a great deal on this lake front cottage: the perfect location…but not so perfect interior.
Over the first few weeks of my Lakehouse Makeover, I shared the “Befores” of our Lakehouse and my plan to makeover 5 different rooms. I’m tackling our Living Room, Dining Room, Breakfast Room, Kid’s Bonus Room, and our Kid’s Triple Bunkroom. Woo! That is a lot, I know. But we want this place ready for Memorial Day Weekend-the start of fun in the sun!
If you missed it, you’ll want to check out the past weeks because I shared the FREE Room Design for each space:
Week #1: FREE Living Room, Dining Room & Breakfast Room Designs
Week #2: FREE Kid Bonus Room Design + Shopping List
Week #3: FREE Coastal Kid Bedroom Design + Shopping List
Week #4: Kid Bonus Room Reveal!
And because I’m tackling so many rooms, I thought I would space out the different Room Reveals as I finished them! Last week I shared the Reveal of our upstairs Kid’s Bonus Room. This week I’m revealing the adjacent bedroom: our Shared Kid’s Bedroom Design. And next week (which is the final week) I’m going to share the biggest part of our Lakehouse Makeover: The Living Room, Dining Room, and Breakfast Room!
The Existing Kid’s Bedroom
But quickly, I’ll take you back to the beginning! This is what the upstairs bedroom looked like when we bought our Lakehouse. It happens to be the largest bedroom in the place, so we decided to turn it into a Shared Kid Bedrooms for our three kiddos: ages 11, 9, and 7. My first thought was to use bunk beds, but the room ended up being trickier than a thought. Between the door and window placements and the sloped ceiling, bunk beds weren’t going to work. So I came up with a plan to use three twin beds.
The Existing Bedroom:
Grab the Free Plan: Coastal Shared Kid Bedroom Design
And here is the plan I came up with for our Shared Kid’s Bedroom! Since I have two girls and a boy, I wanted a gender neutral space that had a coastal feeling of being on a lake. The whole design is full of navy and white, with some fun coastal decor accents. But the best part: everything is very budget friendly. Most of the bedroom is from Target, Etsy, and Homegoods. The bedding…just $20 a set!

Coastal Kid Bedroom Design Reveal
And without further ado…the reveal of our Shared Kid’s Bedroom!
Coastal Kid’s Bedding
Because it is a small bedroom, I wanted each bed to look identical to make the room see more cohesive. I started each kid’s bed with navy upholstered headboards with a nailhead trim. Then I layered on a $20 Target navy & white striped comforter along with a $20 set of patterned sheets from Target’s Pillowfort line. I found some inexpensive accent pillows on a shopping trip to Homegoods. The kids can use these lumbar pillows for when they read in bed at night.
While I wanted three identical beds, I did want to personalize each kid’s bed (and to break up any fighting over whose bed is whose!). Each child has a custom Etsy pillow labeled either “1”, “2”, or “3”, based on their birth order. And all of you babies of the family can relate, but I had to put my youngest daughter on the end under the sloped ceiling…since she is the shortest!
Kid Furniture for Small Bedrooms
Again, this isn’t a huge bedroom-especially for three twin beds, so I had to be really careful on the furniture I used. These navy upholstered beds are headboards only, so I could use an inexpensive bed frame that helped cut down on the space each bed too up. But I still didn’t have room for a standard nightstand. So instead, I nabbed two of these galvanized metal barstools to act as nightstands! There is enough room for a table lamp (I loved these coastal looking table lamps from Target) and a glass of water at night.
The metal barstools are easy to clean (just wipe them off), which work with this casual Lakehouse setting. (Because the last thing I want to do while at the lake is clean!)
Gender Neutral Kid’s Bedding
Like I mentioned, I wanted bedding that would work for my son and daughters alike. So I went with a coastal palette of navy, white, and gray, and layered on a lot of different textures. These navy lumbar pillows and navy polka dot pillows are all from Homegoods. The sheet set is from Target, and these custom numeral throw pillows are from Etsy.
My oldest daughter likes to stay up late and read, while her little sis is usually the first to conk out at night. So I gave the kids a pair of these light wood table lamps so they wouldn’t have to turn on the ceiling light.
This fun ceramic hand sculpture is another HomeGoods find-I wanted to add in some fun, kid-friendly elements since this is their space.
Budget Friendly Lakehouse Kid Room Accents
I’ll be honest…I bought this Target felt Shark head before I bought almost anything else! As soon as I saw this little guy, I knew he would be perfect in this coastal style bedroom. And to make it even more perfect, my 9 year old son loves all things S-H-A-R-K-S. (If you ask him, he can talk to you for hours about the different between hammerheads and bull sharks. It is adorable). We joke that his guy keeps our kids safe while they sleep…
So we nicknamed this guy “George”!
Coastal Kid Wall Art
One of my main goals was to create a very budget friendly kid room design. I purchased this digital download from Etsy for $5! This frame actually came with our Lakehouse (but was in a dark stain), so I painted it white, and popped in the new print. You can find the link to this print, along with the rest of the items in this kid’s bedroom, in my Free Resource Library. (You can scroll to the bottom of this post for the link).
Choosing the Perfect Color Combo for a Shared Kid Bedroom
I mentioned before that I chose a:
Navy, White, and Gray Color Scheme for my Kid’s Shared Bedroom
I loved this combo because it is:
1.Gender Neutral
2.Worked with a Coastal Theme
3.Bright and Cheery
But I wanted one more color to pull everything together, so I painted the walls this pale aqua color. Paint is one of the easiest and most budget friendly ways to update any room. The previous owners had added the faux wood ceiling, so I left those as is. But these aqua walls kept the room feeling bright and cheery.
My youngest daughter wanted her special Unicorn included in the photo shoot, so she is hanging out of one of the bed’s today! (It is part of Target’s Pillowfort line):
Shared Kid Bedroom Storage
Like most homes…you can never have too much storage. But in our Lakehouse it is especially important because….
None of the Bedrooms had closets.
Eek. So having a dresser in the room was especially important. To take up the least amount of square footage possible, I chose a tall and narrow dresser. This one piece of furniture has to work for all three kids. I also purchased under-the-bed type storage for each child’s bed to maximize clothing storage.
And to keep going with the coastal look, I framed this vintage style “Go Boating” print (you can find this at Wayfair) and a fun vintage style mint green fan. Our Lakehouse doesn’t have air conditioning, so it was important to include fans in all of the upstairs bedrooms.
Coastal Window Treatments
We affectionately call our Lakehouse “The Burrow” because it reminds us of Ron Weasley’s rambling home from the Harry Potter books. There are at least four different additions that were added over time to our cottage-which means there are different styles of windows and doors throughout. To keep a cohesive, consistent look, I chose these woven wood shades for every single window in the cottage. It helps pull all of the rooms together, and keeps away from the fussiness of curtains.
Coastal Shared Kid Bedroom Makeover Reveal
And here it is again! Our coastal, nautical Shared Kid Bedroom! The nice thing about this layout is it works for our three kids, but it also works well for guests. We’ve used this bedroom for Girl Weekends and when we have extended family over-it works great for a lot of flexibility (the rest of our Lakehouse beds are full or queen sized).
I love how it turned out, and I love how inexpensively I was able to pull it all together. I guess that means more money leftover for some fun blow up water toys for the kids!
