Check out This Mid Century Modern Playroom Design
Hi friend, I’m so glad you stopped by Postbox Designs! I’m a Mom of 3, Interior Designer, and I ate Oreos for lunch today. 🙂 And if you have been hanging around here for long, you know I’m a HUGE advocate for
“Real Design for Real Life”
And that is the most true when I work on kid’s spaces. So much so that I recently launched Postbox Designs KIDS-it is custom Interior E-Design just for kid’s spaces! So when this Mom of three came to me, she wanted a kid-centric area that also reflected their love of all things Mid Century Modern. So what does a Mid Century Modern Playroom design look like? Let me show you around this fun, colorful, and whimsical Playroom for this family of 5!
Modern Playroom Design + Homework Station + Reading Nook +Kid Craft Area
I think one of the trickiest thing about a Playroom Design for most of my clients is:
We are trying to fit a lot of functions into one single room.
This Playroom Makeover needed to fit a lot of great activities into one space. In this 13′-x18′ space we fit in a:
Playroom
Kid Homework Station
Reading Nook
Activity & Craft Table
Command Center
Mudroom for the Whole Family
Wanna see how we made it all fit into one (super fun) space? Let’s take a look around!
There are three siblings that are going to use this Playroom, so it had to work for different ages AND boys and girls alike. Mom and Dad wanted a Mid Century Vibe and they requested a lot of C-O-L-O-R! And my priorities were also to create a durable, easy to clean space and used up every single inch of the room.
Kid’s Craft & Activity & Game Table
I started with this great Mid Century Modern table (#5) from Target. Then I added four turquoise modern chairs (#4) from All Modern. This table can multi-function as a craft table, activity table, puzzle table, or game table. I suggested keeping two of the chairs at the table, and the other two chairs at the Homework Station. So if friends are over, the kids can pull the extra chairs over to the table. Then I suggested this bright, multicolored rug (#2) from Rugs USA that brings in a ton of color and fun. And P.S. the pattern will hide a multitude of sins as well…but we won’t tell the kids we are planning for them to get messy in here!
Kid’s Homework Station Design
A huge part of this Modern Playroom Design was creating a Homework Station (that could also double up to store Legos and craft supplies). My absolute favorite shared kid’s desk layout is shown in this Inspirational Photo (#1), and is composed entirely of budget-friendly Ikea parts. Item #3 shows a storage system to store Legos within the drawers. Above the desk I created this fun Wall Gallery of brightly colored modern kid’s artwork (#6,7,8,11 & 12). They are all digital download prints from Etsy (most costing just a few dollars).
Creating a Modern Kid’s Art Gallery
But we also wanted the kids to display their own creations as well. We used a blank wall to create this fun wall gallery using brightly painted empty picture frames (#14). Kids can use washi tape to tack up their artwork, and they can easily switch it out as the mood strikes.
Creating a Reading Nook for Kids
Creating some sort of “reading nook” is a pretty common request of parents when we are creating a Playroom design. And as a self-professed book worm, I’m always thrilled to give kid’s a special place to get lost in a book. In this Playroom design, we gave the kids two places to read. This Crate & Kids play “theater” tent (#27) can be used for plays and performances (a specific request from my clients) but can also be used as a reading nook.
The second reading nook was a faux “window seat” I created out of Ikea cabinets (#19 and #20). I used two of these Ikea cabinet combos (#19) and pushed them together to create a bench. Then I layered on fun and color with these Target throw pillows (#24-26).
How to Lay Out a Modern Playroom Design
Whenever you are trying to fit a lot of functions into one space, space planning is the name of the game. It is important to find the right scaled pieces, furniture that can multi-function, and taking advantage of vertical wall space. I always include a to-scale Floor Plan for all of my clients. It includes notes of how to lay items out as well. You can see more of What Comes Inside a Postbox. All of my clients get Mood Boards, Floor Plans, Shopping Lists, step-by-step directions, and on some Room Packages: elevations and 3D rendering as well.
Creating a Modern Playroom Design: Take Two
With all of my Room Packages, I always include a round of revisions. I sent the first design to my client and asked her to give me feedback and thoughts. In Round #2 we swapped some things out, and included a whole new set of artwork ideas.
Creating a Mudroom & Command Center in a Playroom Design
Remember at the beginning I mentioned my clients also needed this Playroom space to work as a Mudroom & Command Center? That Ikea “reading nook” (#20) isn’t merely just for reading. No sir! It also doubles up as a mini “mudroom design”. The tall Ikea cabinets take advantage of the wall space and provide plenty of storage for jackets, purses, and bags. These cabinets are wardrobe cabinets that come with a hanging rod inside. (P.S. I have also used these Ikea wardrobe cabinets for dress-up stations in past Playroom designs)
Inside the cabinets is a charging station (#18) and a series of six mailboxes. I suggested to hang six mailboxes (#22) in the open space over the bench. Inside is a bright green folder (#21). Each family member can have their own mailbox, plus there is another for items like bills. The folders keep it looking neat and clean, instead of having papers spilling out of each mailbox. These modern white mailboxes are from Staples. Mom and Dad can corral smaller items inside their cabinets with these inexpensive baskets (#23)
And finally, I found these modern hooks (#29) for the three kids’ backpacks. We had a blank wall space to hang them (#31). If you are looking for hooks to hang backpacks, please be sure to double check the weight they can carry. You don’t want hooks getting pulled out of the wall!
Create a Custom Kid Room Design with Postbox Designs KIDS
Playroom Designs are actually my #1 most requested room in the entire house! So after a few years of doing more and more kid bedrooms, nurseries, playrooms, and bonus rooms, I decided to launch Postbox Designs KIDS.
I start off by sending the parent’s a Questionnaire and one for the kids as well (if they are old enough). There is a place for them to describe them dream room AND a drawing template if they would prefer to draw it. Once we are finished custom designing your space, I send your Room-Inside-a-Box directly to your door. Inside are all of the drawings, shopping lists, and material samples for your room. There is even a surprise for your kiddos so they can get excited about their new room. Have questions on how it works or want to chat about your kid room design?
