Two Neutral Living Room Design Makeovers
Hi Friend, I’m so glad you found Postbox Designs. Around here 90% of my clients are families with kids and pets-so not only do their rooms need to be beautiful, but functional and practical as well. But believe me-that does NOT mean boring. So when this Mom asked me to help her create a Neutral Living Room she wanted something that was part “glam” and part “rustic”…and 100% durable with her kids.
And once we finished with her Living Room, she asked me to help her with a SECOND Living Room. This second Living Room needed to be part Craft Room and part Sitting Room for TV watching and overnight guests. So today let me take you on two Neutral Living Room Makeovers!
Neutral Living Room Design #1
With all of my Postbox Designs clients, I start off the process by sending them a Welcome Packet. And part of the Welcome Packet is a request for a Pinterest board full of images they love. In fact this inspirational image (#1) was from her Pinterest board…and I created her custom design to create a similar look.
The unique thing about this Living Room, was it was a very long skinny room, so we divided the room into two parts. One side had her existing modern gray sectional sofa (#6). Similar to her dream room, I found a rustic round coffee table (#6) to go with it. On the other side of her Living Room we placed her navy sofa (#2) with a modern wood and metal coffee table from Pottery Barn (#7).
Because we were trying to create two sides of the room that still coordinated with each other, I needed to repeat the same colors on both sides of the room. One of the ways I did this was with the neutral mix of throw pillows in browns, grays, creams, and navy (#4, 5, 10, 11, and 12) scatted on both sides of the room. Another way to tie the whole Living Room design together was with pops of black metal. From the Pottery Barn TV cabinet (#15) and black metal tray (#14) on one side of the Living Room to the black metal legs on the coffee table (#7) and end table (#3) on the other side of the room. And finally, a large graphic area rug (#13) helped tie everything together.
Neutral Living Room Accessories
Now, we had the main piece of Living Room furniture…but it is that “last 10%” of a room that always makes all of the difference. Layering in accessories is what creates a polished, finished looking space!
To keep a “glam” look to her Neutral Living Room design, I added in some pops of modern gold throughout her Living Room like these modern Project 62 gold vases (#19), gold Target table lamp (#20) and gold frames for her watercolor abstract art (#24), which was an Etsy find.
Because she has young kids, I didn’t want to use anything very expensive or breakable for her coffee table, so I found a series of Target decor items to finish off the space such as the faux plant (#17), wood vases (#18), and the above mentioned gold vases (#18).
Neutral Living Room Design #2
After I helped her create her first Living Room, my client reached out to me for help with a second room. She had a room off her Kitchen that needed to serve a lot of duties. It needed to have a seating area for TV viewing, work as a Craft Room for her kids, and needed a pull-out sofa for overnight guests. And like her first Living Room, she wanted to keep a neutral, glam-meets-rustic decor. Because this was a more kid-centric room, she requested a budget friendly space as well.
I started with this gray modern loveseat from Houzz that is also a pull-out sofa (#2). For extra seating, I found these modern beige armchairs from Target (#9). To add texture and neutral color, we loaded on these fun throw pillows (#13 and #5 for the sofa and #4 for the armchairs). All of the pillows were also finds from Target.
To fill up a large empty room, I suggested creating a grid Wall Gallery (similar to #15) with Target gold frames full of black and white family photos. A World Market faux fiddle fig tree (#8) fills up an empty corner, and this graphic rug (#10) helps ground the space.
For storage, I found this weathered wood eight cubby unit (#14) filled with these gray felt bins (#12)…both from Target. Even though these bins will be used for craft supplies, games, and other kid items, you can still create a sophisticated, neutral look, especially when your kid needs are out in the open like this space. Finally, this modern coffee table from Target (#3) has a bottom shelf for extra storage, and it can double up as a game table as well.
Two Living Room Designs for the Same House
So here it is: two different Living Rooms with a similar look. The first is more of a “Gold” budget with items from places like West Elm, Pottery Barn, and Crate and Barrel. The second Living Room is more of a “Silver” budget with items from place like Target.
A huge thank-you to my client for allowing me to share her project with you! I know I got some ideas for my own home while designing hers. If you want to know more about Online Interior Design you can see How It Works and check out all of the Room Packages & Pricing
