Meet This Farmhouse Family Room Makeover
Hi friend! Welcome to Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design, if you are new around here: I’m Kristin! I started Postbox Designs because I wanted to work around my kid’s schedules. But then I quickly realized that so many of my clients were in the same position: they were multi-tasking super starts trying to juggle work, family, and just LIFE. And it is hard to add one more project to your plate. To have to schedule multiple meetings with an Interior Designer, choose dozens of items…it can be overwhelming. So instead, my clients and I do everything virtually! I create their custom Room Design, then I send them their Room-Inside-a-Box. Then they can pull their room together as their budget and schedule allows. Pretty cool, right?
So I want to introduce this Room Makeover to you! My client was so sweet (she is a teacher after all) and has two little boys. In fact, her son and my son share the same name, so I was instantly connected to her! And she wanted to pull together two rooms before the craziness of the new school year began.
Farmhouse Family Room Design
Let me show you what we did: My client requested a rustic Farmhouse Family Room that is mostly neutral…but with a few pops of color to keep it fun!
I started off this room with one of my favorite budget friendly sectional sofas: this is the “Ektorp” sofa from Ikea. It has a slipcover so Mom and Dad can take it off and wash it as needed. Then we added in some color and pattern with a bunch of fun pillows! Items #14-17 are all from Etsy and gave a chance to add in some pops of red and navy. The monogram pillow (#14) gives some personality to their space.
One of my favorite designer tricks I used in this Room Makeover:
This petite wingback chair (#3) is from Pottery Barn’s “PB Apartment” line. This is a great line to look into for more budget friendly finds, and most have a smaller scale. It is all of the same great Pottery Barn look and quality, but usually less expensive. Then we added in these rustic side tables to add to the “Farmhouse” look (#4).
A “Boy Friendly” Family Room Design
One of my client’s requests was a “boy friendly” Family Room! Her boys play basketball, make forts, and act like fun, active boys. So this leather ottoman (#8) was a great fit: easy to wipe down and no sharp edges! In fact, to encourage their basketball playing, we even added a rustic basket ball hoop (#13) in the corner of the room. We carved out a mini “Playroom” inside their Farmhouse Family Room with the hoop and a 6-cubby bookshelf (#12) to store their toys and books.
Farmhouse Wall Decor
And what is a rustic Farmhouse Family Room…without word art!? It is a staple of any Farmhouse design. I found this trio of word art (#10) from Etsy. (I also gave her another version of a trio of artwork showing rustic wood slices). And I also loved this word art print (#7) with a faux chalkboard finish. These are inexpensive “digital downloads” so she can easily swap out artwork in the future for a whole new look.
Alternative Options
I always like to try to give some “Alternate” options for my clients. So on this Mood Board I gave her alternative options for her side table (#25), armchair (#24), and TV cabinet (#23). I also rounded out the room with some more accessories like this striped indoor/outdoor rug (#27) which will be easier to clean than a standard rug. (If this rug can handle the great outdoors, it can handle a couple of boys).
Bringing a Farmhouse Family Room to Life
I offer several different Room Packages and my “Full Design” Room Package includes a 3D Rendering of the space. I love these so much because it allows my client to see their entire room….before ordering a single item. Plus it gives them an easy guide to pulling their room together.
Farmhouse Craft Room Design
And I was thrilled that I got to work on TWO rooms for my lovely client! In the space adjacent to her Family Room, was their underused Dining Room. Instead of a traditional Dining Room, these fun parents wanted to turn the space into a Craft Room for their two boys!
So I started the space with a modern farmhouse dining room table (#3) which was a score from Walmart of all places! And paired it up with these Target modern Windsor chairs (#2). By starting off with “dining room” furniture, they can easily convert this room back to an eating space if desired. But in the meantime, this table will work great as a “Craft Table” for the boys. A classic Farmhouse lantern style chandelier (#10) will also work for a future “dining room”.
And because this Craft Room is a kid friendly space, I wanted to fill up the walls with fun and colorful artwork. Again, these are all digital downloads from Etsy, usually costing only a few dollars each (Items #4,7,8, and 11). For Item #7 I suggested they get a print in both boy’s initials, so it would really feel like THEIR space. And this fun felt pennant (#5) also works with this kid creative space.
4 Types of Craft Room Storage
And what is the #1 thing all crafters need? TONS of organized storage! And this Mom wisely requested a lot of closed door storage so she could shut the doors and not see the mess. I have found through experience that DRAWERS can be easier to organize than DOORS. So I created most of the boy’s storage out of a series of Ikea Alex drawer units (#16). On top of the set of cabinets, smaller storage items like this tiered basket (#15) can store spools of ribbons or bottles of paint. This galvanized caddy (#6) can be filled with mason jars that organize pens, markers, crayons, etc. And finally this Ikea rolling storage cart (#13) can be moved closer to the craft tables as projects are underway.
