Need a Spot for Your Teen’s? Check Out This Bonus Room Makeover
Hey friend, thanks for stopping by Postbox Designs! I’m a Mom of 3, Interior Designer, and “cat mom” to Dodge. And I love the world of Interior E-Design because I get to work with so many great clients all over the country! And how fun is this? This Mom came to me wanting to create a Teen Hangout Bonus Room Makeover as a CHRISTMAS PRESENT for her two teenagers-how fun is that? So we created this design, so that her kids could open it up on Christmas morning! I always include a round of revisions, so we saved that until after Christmas so her kids could weigh in on the design as well. Want to check it out?
This Bonus Room was an empty space with sloped walls so we had to be careful about where furniture could go since wall space was precious in this room. And this Mom had a couple of requests for their Bonus Room Makeover:
Sofa and TV/Video Game area
Desks for her son and daughter
Game/Craft Table
Foosball Table
So we started with this gray sofa (#3) and piled on tons of fun and colorful pillows (#12-15), and also found a few more for their existing window seat (#4 and #8). Since they have a girl and a boy, I wanted to find colors that were gender neutral and would work for teens. Mom also clued me in that the WHOLE family loves Disney and especially loves family Disney cruises, so I sprinkled in some Disney love throughout the whole Bonus Room design.
This gray table (#7) and Target chairs (#6) work as a Game Table and Craft Table, and we added in some more budget friendly furniture with this Target TV cabinet (#11) and Wayfair coffee table (#10) with room for extra storage. And finally, we left room for their foosball table, and I gave her this fun idea to keep score (#2).
Bonus Room Decor
Bonus Room Design: Kid Desk Area
I always ask my clients about their hobbies and interests, and I especially want to include that in kid spaces. So these double kid desk areas were the perfect space to personalize for each kid! The desk on the left is for their daughter, and the desk on the right is for their son. These bright yellow desks (#9) are from Target, and the artwork is a mix of Target and Etsy items.
Bonus Room Decor: Adding in the Disney Flair
I found these amazing vintage Disney posters online for my client to frame for the walls (#26-28). And when I sent the design to my client she told me that had JUST booked a Disney Cruise to Hawaii-so that middle poster was meant to be! 🙂
And finally, I found these beanbags (#29) to work as a “reading corner” along with fun graphic pillows (#30), and they can also be pulled over to the TV area when friends are over to watch a movie or play video games.
How to Lay Out a Bonus Room: The Floor Plan
Sometimes when you have a big open room, it is all about fitting in furniture in just the right placement so that everything works! Especially in this case with those sloped ceilings, it was a bit extra tricky to place the furniture.
