4 Ways to Pull Together the Perfect Neutral Bedroom Design
Hi friend, welcome to Postbox Designs. Around here it is all about Real Designs for Real Life. I’m a Mom to three, I’ve been an Interior Designer for over 14 years now, and I think the best rooms are beautiful…but also practical and durable enough for real life. No “look-but-don’t-touch” spaces around here!
And today I’m sharing a neutral bedroom design + neutral bathroom design! This fabulous client is actually a past client (I helped her design her Living Room), so I was thrilled when she reached out for help creating her Master Suite. Today she was kind enough to let me share it with you…and I’m also sharing 5 Tips to Create a Neutral Bedroom (and Bathroom) of your own. Let’s check it out…
Neutral Bedroom Design Tip #1: Mix Wood and Paints
Want to know the #1 way to create a boring bedroom? Use an entire matching set of furniture. You know the one…where the bed, dressers, and nightstands are the exact same style and finish? Instead, you want to create a layered look that COORDINATES but doesn’t scream “matchy-matchy”. I suggest sticking with three different finishes. In this neutral bedroom design, I gave my client two different combos: one with a wood bed frame and white painted nightstands, the second was the opposite combo. For the third finish, I snuck in a navy dresser.
Neutral Bedroom Design Tip #2: Textures Are Your Hidden Trick
Want a clean, neutral look that isn’t boring? Stick with textures! We layered on neutral, but textured layers of bedding, woven shades, matte white vases, and a wood bead chandelier. Getting the point? While they are all in neutrals, having the different textures and finishes make your bedroom interesting.
Neutral Bedroom Design Tip #3: Go with Classic Patterns
I’ll be honest, I never met a stripe I didn’t like. But I’m not totally off here friends…stripes are a classic for a reason. I used this inspirational image from my client’s Pinterest board (Image #1) that shows neutral, solid bedding, and then I added in these striped pillows for a pop of color and pattern. Two of these blue stripe pillows (#5) are pinstripes, so they work with the bolder, wider stripes of the lumbar pillow (#6).
Neutral Bedroom Design Tip #4: Add in Personal Artwork
My clients live near the water, so I found these modern coastal prints (#20 and #23) for my client’s bedroom. I also suggested they fill up a wall with a grid style Gallery Wall of framed black and white family prints (not shown). A bedroom should be relaxing, but it is also such a personal space-so don’t be afraid to bring YOU into your space.
Farmhouse Neutral Bathroom Design
I also helped my client with her adjacent Master Bathroom design! They are doing a remodel of an existing space, so they wanted to keep a few of the items (such as their existing tile floor and possibly their dark cabinetry). So we needed to find a new look, that would still coordinate with her existing items.
Creating a Farmhouse Neutral Bathroom
We started with this Modern Farmhouse Bathroom as inspiration (Item #1), so I selected these metal Pottery Barn mirrors and modern polished nickel light fixtures from Shades of Light. A new white quartz counter will work with their existing dark cabinetry. And finally, I helped her design her new, neutral shower. Small hex tile work well for a bathroom floor (pro tip: you always want to stick with tiles less than 1″ large for a shower floor so it isn’t slippery). Then we added an accent wall of black and white cement tile, with the other two walls in a neutral, classic subway tile.
To pop against all of the white materials, I chose all matte black plumbing fixtures. And finally, a woven runner, to be placed in front of the vanity, adds some cozy warmth to the space (and helps with those chilly mornings).
4 Different Neutral Shower Designs
After our first design, my client wanted to see some more shower options. So I created four different shower combo options for her (and as a bonus-they can totally be mixed and matched!). All of these shower designs are neutral, with mixing in different colors, textures, or shapes to keep things interesting.
