A True Farmhouse Living Room for a Real Farmhouse
Hi Friend, thanks for stopping by and visiting me here at Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design!
If you are new around here-I’m Kristin-Mama of 3, I love anything with a carb in it, and if it is covered in chocolate, then all the better. And even though I live here in snowy Michigan, I found a way to work with amazing clients all over the country. While I’ve been an Interior Designer for around 14 years, I’ve been working solely with Online Interior Design (if you are new to the idea, found out how How It Works) for over 5 years. After sending my client a specialized Welcome Packet, I virtually design my client’s room and create all of the drawings, shopping lists, and step-by-step instructions they need to pull their entire room together. I even gather up paint and fabric samples and send them their way too. Then, they can order their an entire room in an hour, in their PJs over a cup of coffee (or glass of wine….)
Working on a Real Farmhouse Design
And did I mention how amazing my clients are? I was thrilled when this client reached out to me, she wanted a modern-meets-rustic Modern Farmhouse Living Room…and that she lived on a real life farm. Her husband is an actual farmer and so she really needed items that would stand up to muddy boots and real farm life. How great is that? She already had some great pieces that she loved and wanted to keep (such as her leather sofa, pair of beige armchairs and rug), and she wanted me to help her find all of the finishes touches to make her home feel warm and cozy.
Want to see what we came up with? Let’s take a look around her new Farmhouse Living Room design!
Durability was really important to my client. So I gave her two thumbs up on keeping her existing leather sofa (leather gets better looking with age, is easy to clean, and is a great durable material). I also found this Restoration Hardware coffee table (#6) that was already distressed, cracked and broken in…so boots on the table wouldn’t be a big deal! Then I filled up her sofa and armchairs with this mix of warm and cozy materials in the form of throw pillows (#11-15). I’m a huge fan of pillow COVERS, so you can take them off and wash them (I made sure these were all machine washable fabrics as well).
Her husband had his own chair that needed a bomb proof fabric (that was also attractive), so I was thrilled to find this masculine, sophisticated plaid fabric (#8), but it is also an outdoor Sunbrella fabric. So it is about as hardy as fabrics come…unless you want to cover all of your furniture in plastic. (Anyone else’s grandma besides mine do that back in the day?)
Farmhouse Living Room Accessories
And of course, I wanted to help her finish off her spaces with rustic, fun accessories. Since she lived on an actual farm I found this horse photo for over her fireplace (#3) and a mix of industrial rustic pieces. I wanted to curate a mix of more modern pieces with “found” rustic pieces like these pizza paddles (#26) and dough bowls (#9). Modern modern pieces like this Pottery Barn brass lamps (#20) and brass tray (#21) added some straight lines and shine so that the room didn’t go TOO rustic.
And I always try to include an “Alternatives” board for my clients that show a bonus page of extra pieces and accessories that can also work in their room design!
Farmhouse Living Room Design: Take II
With all of my clients, I always include a round of revisions. It can be HARD to try to describe your dream room! And I have found it is a lot easier to give feedback on specific items, rather than trying to explain what you want in the first place. So I always send my client Version #1 of their design, then ask for their honest feedback and thoughts. Then I make swap-outs, find alternative items to help create their perfect room. And guess what…Version #2 is almost always better than Version #1!
More Rustic Farmhouse Living Room Ideas
And I was so blessed because my client has fabulous taste. She had some wonderful alternative suggestions for Version #2. And one thing she let me know…she loves abstract art. I love this warm abstract piece (#3) to go over her fireplace. Adding this modern piece with the more rustic elements is just a great juxtaposition and something unexpected in a space. A new (smaller) Restoration Hardware coffee table (#6) is also in this design.
In Version #2 we also swapped out the side tables for new ones (#18 and #19). I also like using a mix of different materials, so a room doesn’t look too matchy-matchy. So I love this mix of rustic woods, metals, and now the addition of concrete into the design mix.
