5 Neutral Kid Spaces: Neutral Bonus Room Designs
Welcome to Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design where we are talking all things kids today! I’ll fully admit it, I definitely have a favorite child. DESIGN child that is…Kid spaces are hands down my favorite spaces to decorate. And I use my 3 kiddos (8, 10, and 12) as my guinea pigs…they have shown me (first hand) what is breakable, what stains, and what holds up over the long term. And most importantly-what is just “pretty” and what is “pretty AND functional”. So I don’t waste my time with designing “look but don’t touch rooms”, I want to design spaces that will function for you just as well!
Neutral Bonus Room Design #1: Bonus Room for the Grandkids
I recently worked with this (awesome) grandma who reached out to me wanting to update her Bonus Room where her grandkids hung out when they came to visit. She already had her sofa and a second sleeper sofa, but she needed to “finish off” her space. And it made me realize, while I LOVE bold, colorful spaces for kids, I have definitely also designed a lot of neutral spaces for kids-neutral Bonus Room and neutral Playrooms. So I decided I would round up some of my favorite NEUTRAL Bonus Room spaces to share with y’all. Starting with this newest one…
My client wanted mostly a neutral Bonus room, but she requested some pops of greens. So Crate and Kids bookcases and some olive green throw pillows were mixed into the black/gray/white theme. We also we able to mix in some of her existing pillows (#7 and #8). We also added in some neutral artwork that also pays homage to the fact she lives on a farm!
Neutral Bonus Room Design #2: Kid’s Playroom + Music Room
You can check out the FULL blog post at 4 Rooms: A Modern Neutral Basement Makeover where I helped this Mom design a Laundry Room, Theater Room, and Living Room as well as this Playroom and Music Room:
But for this Round-Up, I created a Playroom that had a neutral color palette, but also some fun “kid” pops of fun like fun artwork, cozy pillows, and hanging chairs! Plus her kids love music, so I created this fun, neutral and slightly industrial music room complete with stage and wall fall mixing board decal + glass wall…just like a real music studio. Um, can she be MY mom? 🙂
Neutral Bonus Room #3: A Modern Neutral Basement + Playroom
I truly love all of the projects I work on, but SOMETIMES you get a client with such similar tastes that I kinda feel like I’m designing for myself as I’m designing for them! This was one of those projects-I would seriously buy every one of these items for my own house. As part of this Basement Makeover we did a Home Bar and Foyer area (not shown here, but you can see it in the link below), as well as a Living Room and Playroom. Again, you can totally go neutral and with a bit of a “grown up” vibe but still really kid friendly. Fun artwork, a secret reading area in the teepee and fuzzy rug, a craft table, and lots of toy storage make it an area kids can play in for hours.
You can check out all of the details in the original post: “Wanna See a Basement Makeover as Fancy as the Upstairs?”
Neutral Bonus Room Design #4: Farmhouse Kid’s Homework Center
So this is a peek into my own house! I actually did this makeover for my three kids a few years ago, but it still is one of my most searched makeovers! My house had an odd space off my kid’s bedrooms-basically an over sized hallway. Instead of it being a bit of a wasted space, I turned it into a Homework Center for my kids. But it turned out, not only do they do homework here, but it also makes for an epic Lego table! You can check out the whole makeover and grab the FREE SHOPPING LIST of this neutral kid space here (and see the updates I did a year later):

Neutral Bonus Room Design #5: Neutral Farmhouse Playroom
This Mom of four reached out to me looking for a design for her kid’s shared Playroom/Homework room. It had to work for boys and girls, and a wide range of kids-a baby to school aged kids. She loved all things Fixer Upper, and wanted a very neutral look. You can check out all of the details here, as well as their shared bunk room (plus that post shares four other Playroom designs):

Neutral Vs. Colorful Playroom
So what do you think? Would you go neutral or colorful in your kid’s space? Honestly it is a toss up for me! I adore this neutral look, but it is also so fun to go wild and free with color you may not use in the rest of your home. Feel free to search my blog for “playrooms” and you’ll find a whole slew of colorful Playroom and Bonus Room designs if you need some more ideas!

I have one more design idea source to share with you. In fact, my favorite source to share with you happens to be F-R-E-E. I created a Free Resource Library that has Free Room Designs for just about every room of your house (including plenty of kid spaces), as well as the Shopping Lists. When you sign up, you will get an email with a link and password so you can access it 24/7. Enjoy!
