A Sports Theme Basement For the Fam
Anyone who knows me would think it be wildly ironic that I would design anything with a sports theme basement (or any room for that matter). Me, who doesn’t know when the Super Bowl is, or when baseball season starts, and who can’t tell you the name of one sports icon not made famous in the 80s. But alas, here I was getting to design an amazing fun sports theme basement for this fun family of 5 who wants to use the space for game nights, parties with friends, and a teen hang out. Go team.
And before we start, if you are new around here, I’m glad you found me! I’m Kristin, I’ve been a designer for over 15 years, and doing this whole Interior E-Design thing for over six years with my company Postbox Designs Interior E-Design. If this is a new concept to you, feel free to check out how it all works right HERE!
And with no further ado, let’s check out this week’s Sports Theme Basement Makeover…
Rules for a Sports Theme Basement
Okay, there are no real rules, let’s be honest! However, I would list a couple of really important must-haves:
1.Super comfy seating: a sectional is an amazing way to fit in a large group, like this Pottery Barn version
2. Cozy leather chairs (you CAN find some attractive recliner versions for a win-win)
3. A durable coffee table: feet, snacks, drinks will all find a home here, nothing flimsy
4. Game Table (that can double as a snack table)
5. Games (if you have the space): In this sports theme basement I added darts, foosball, and my personal fav, a skee ball machine, which brings back my own childhood memories
6. A Home Bar: This beautiful basement already had one, complete with an island and seating, I just helped her style it up!
7. Neutral sports theme art (see below for my reasoning on this one!)
Furniture for a Masculine Basement Design
Even though girls will most definitely be using the space, I went for a neutral, masculine look with leather, plaid, tweed, and herringbone to give a feel of an old school space. Because it is for a family, I went with high performance, contract grade fabrics on the sectional sofa and leather armchairs (which are so easy to clean and keep looking fab). This Pottery Barn coffee table has a durable, slightly rustic finish and it boasts hidden storage, always a win. Finally this four top round table can work for an overflow snack area or long euchre nights!
Sports Theme Basement Artwork
This family had a ton of really cool memorabilia from all of their teams, but because they have a lot of favorite pro and college teams, there were a lot of colors and mascots going on. So instead, I created one big Gallery Wall to showcase all of this cool wall art, and left space to grow. Then, in the rest of the space I found some more modern, neutral sports themed artwork to hang all around the space. I sourced these sports diagram prints from Etsy and found vintage sports theme photos to sprinkle in.
So there you go, a sports theme Basement that is comfy, cozy, and will make this family the most popular ones in the neighborhood! But if you are looking for some more ideas for your Lower Level…
