Introducing the Modern Rustic Living Room (plus a Playroom!)
Full disclosure….I haven’t posted here in a long time, a really long time. But I think y’all can probably understand: three kiddos, COVID, working full time, and just adjusting back into a new school year. But I have been hard at work with my Postbox Designs clients and wanted to start sharing some projects again! Today I wanted to share a really fun one-while this client currently lives in Canada, she and I both hail from the same hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. And she reached out wanting a Modern Rustic Living Room for her young family with a ski theme as a nod to her ski loving husband.
Bring it on! This is the first time I ever had the request for a ski theme in a Living Room design (yeeeeees), and I love the idea of going with a Modern Rustic Living Room bent, so I was excited to start designing away. And since we are just starting the winter season, I thought this would be a great Interior E-Design project to kick off the season for you all as well.
Part I: Modern Rustic Living Room (that’s kid friendly!)
Think a cozy Living Room design meets a Ski Lodge…you know, the place you want to go into for the cocoa when you’re tired of the snow. A comfy cozy sectional and leather armchair were items my client already owned, and I helped her layer on all of the details to pull it together. I used this Image #1 from her own Pinterest board to create this cozy Living Room design with a firm nod to a fabulous ski slope. A huge focal point was layers of patterned throw pillows that mix traditional and modern fabrics, including some that are unabashedly ski themed (like this swiss cross #15 and faux fur #17).
I’m calling it now…everyone is going to fight to snuggled up with the fur pillow.
And my client specifically requested items that were durable and would stand up to small kiddos, so I helped her create a simple coffee table vignette with this metal bowl (#6), candle (#5), durable vase(#11) and filled with some fall foliage (#12) that can be swapped out for the seasons. This wood acorn (#14) was a fun cheeky little touch that can be topped upon a stack of books.
Part II: Modern Rustic Playroom (Ski bunny themed)
In the same open room of the Living Room was this Playroom to create an open space concept. Directly behind the sofa, I created this kid space that is still in view of the TV for movie nights! This galvanized metal table (#22) will work for snacks, puzzles, legos, and craft projects alike. And if you are looking for durable, try these light weight metal chairs (#23) that will withstand toddlers and school aged children alike. A whimsical world map (#24) brings in some kid fun but keeps things neutral enough to be a part of an adult space.
I suggested using these Ikea storage units (#30) that can be glammed up with a few details (like image #21) to store a plethora of toys and craft supplies. I suggested an arrangement of these storage units while creating a “reading seat” in between. By adding a cushion and these fun throw pillows (#31-33) it creates a kiddie reading nook while still pulling in the adult design next door.
Ski Themed Playroom Decor
And of course, we wanted to layer on the requested “ski theme” with these fun Etsy prints that show a modern graphic on the theme (#26) as well as these adventure and wander themed prints to add in some more color and fun.
Ski Themed Basement Bar Design
My client also had a bar area in the space that she wanted some direction of how to style. Bringing in dark and cozy colors, vintage styled skis and modern feeling ski prints will add some lighthearted fun to the space. And finally some new bronze Pottery Barn pendants (#39) and metal stools (#38) keep that industrial rustic vibe in the space.
