One Room Challenge: Girl Bedroom Makeover Reveal
It is Reveal Week!!! Which means I finally get to show off my little girl’s bedroom makeover to y’all!
I’m always the girl who will flip stations to see the first five minutes and LAST five minutes of any HGTV show to check back for the final reveal. So I will not be offended in the least if you missed the first five weeks of my One Room Challenge makeover.
And if this is your first time here, let me say a big old Hello! My name is Kristin, I’m a wife, Mom to three crazy kids (they got me up at 4:45 AM this morning), and a giant Labradoodle named Jasper. While I’ve been an Interior Designer for over 13 years now, I’ve been exclusively doing Interior E-Design for the last three years with my company Postbox Designs, E-Design. Working on my client projects keeps me so busy that I don’t give my own home the lovin’ it needs most of the time. But twice a year I get to focus in on one room of my home and make it over in just six weeks. That may seem like a lot of time but here are some of the things that have happened in my life over the last six weeks: four family birthday parties, a two week sickness, my hubby was out of town on business, starting basketball for one kid, finishing cross country for another, finding and taking in a baby kitten, and an IEP at school (if you have a kiddo with special needs you know exactly how much stress that can bring!). But we did it! And in the meantime, I happened to makeover my daughter’s bedroom.
My youngest daughter Adelyn just turned seven last month and as part of her birthday present I promised her a “unicorn & horse” themed bedroom. If you missed the first five weeks of it, you can check out the progress each week:
Week 1: Grab the FREE Design & Shopping List
Week 2: $69 DIY Light Tutorial
Week 3: Creating a Wall Gallery + The Pink Sofa Reveal!
Week 4: Ultimate Dresser Style Guide + My Fav $2 Decor
Week 5: How to Style the Bed
Love It? Want It? Where Can I Find It?
If you love something you see from Miss A’s bedroom, you are in luck! I created the FREE design and Shopping List for her entire bedroom makeover. You can simply scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out where to grab it.
The Plan: Unicorn Girly Girl Bedroom Decor
Remember that “unicorn and horse theme” my daughter requested for her bedroom decor? Well baby girl wanted a mural on all four walls and more sparkle than you can shake a stick at. So we had to compromise and can up with this sweet and charming bedroom design she can grow into.
Pugs and Unicorns and Llamas…Oh My!
Just because it is a Unicorn themed bedroom doesn’t mean some other animals couldn’t make their way into the fun! I started off her new room with this classic spindle style bed from Wayfair. Then we piled on layers and textures of whites, pinks, and golds. Some sweet throw pillows from Pottery Barn Kids and Target helped complete the look. We went with the colors that Adelyn wanted, but I subdued them with these soft, muted tones. I wanted a Jenny Lind style bed on a budget, so in the end I chose this twin spindle bed
I have to tell you, I feel in L-O-V-E with this Mr. Llama print! I bought him without even asking Adelyn (luckily she loved him too, and my 11 year old daughter desperately wants one in HER bedroom now). While he is cool as can be blowing his bubbles over her bed, we brought in a few more animals into the mix.
For her bedside table, I added this scalloped side table with a pug table lamp (don’t you want to eat him up?!) and this little balloon animal unicorn.
And sometimes you have to snag what you already have. This summer my hubby and I brought home our kids macaroons from Paris and the box was too pretty to throw away. So I kept it and added it to her room. It is the perfect hiding spot to stash some Shopkins!
This little mirror is a clearance snag from HomeGoods and I have a feeling is going to serve as a dress-up mirror for baby girl!
We have been debating on the name of this sweet little unicorn stuffie. Sparkles? Rainbow? My daughter liked “Unicorn-y”! But no matter what her name is, she is already my daughter’s favorite new sleeping mate:
The Pink Sofa that Everyone Fell in Love With
From the beginning this pink velvet sofa was going to play a starring role in my little girl’s bedroom makeover! And believe me young girls and grown women have fallen in love with it, myself included. It has proved to be the perfect spot for reading and snuggling…but it also folds out into a bed for sleep-overs. A win-win. I loaded in on with fun charming pillows to finish off the look.
The Gallery Wall: Girl’s Bedroom Wall Art
But I think one of my favorite parts of the bedroom makeover is Miss A’s new Gallery Wall. As all of my Interior E-Design clients know, I’m a HUGE fan of Etsy digital download prints. If you have ever tried to create a Wall Gallery, you know how impossible it feels to find the right prints in the right size to go with the right frames. I purchased all of these digital downloads for just a few dollars, printed them off to the size I wanted, to go with the frames I had.
“Mom….the horse won’t stop staring at me”
We recently had overnight guests that used my son’s bedroom, so he slept in his sister’s room for a night. Hours after I thought they had gone to bed I found him laying perfectly still….staring at the wall. Apparently this pink’s horse’s unending gaze was quite unnerving to him! He just whispered “Mom…the horse won’t stop staring at me.” Oh my! Luckily Adelyn seems to be just fine with her. Just as a reminder, you can grab the links to all of these prints at the bottom of this post.
My $69 (And 5 Minute) DIY Light Fixture
You can head back to Week #2 for all of the details of this DIY Light Fixture Tutorial, but I’ll tell you, it is the simplest thing ever. I fell hard for a $300 Anthropologie light fixture, but instead created my own version from a Target light fixture and a keychain! It was the perfect little addition to add some bling to this corner of her bedroom design.
The Dresser and My Favorite $2 Décor
The dresser was the one piece of furniture I kept for my girl’s bedroom makeover. I actually bought it for my oldest daughter’s nursery over 11 years ago. To freshen it up, I added a white coat of paint to the top (all three of my kid’s used this in their nursery, so it was more than a little beat-up) and added new matte gold cabinet pulls.
This beautiful unicorn print is the star of the show over the dresser. And I fell in love with these yarn tassel garlands from Ramen Hands when I was designing a little girl’s bedroom for a client. So I knew I wanted to add it to my own daughter’s bedroom makeover. Some pink lamps and Target accessories finished off the look.
But my favorite little piece of décor is this $2 gold horse. I showed this $2 Decor Idea in Week #4 , but I grabbed this plastic toy horse in the above cloche at the Dollar Store. While I spray painted mine with spray paint I already owned, you could do this makeover yourself with a $1 tube of gold paint from a craft store.
And this brown little horse? I dug him out from my daughter’s toy bin! He even has paint marks on him from when my daughter gave him a “make-over”.
More Girl Bedroom Decor: Styling a Dresser
This niche in her bedroom ended up being the perfect spot to move her dresser into. Since my daughter wanted a “Unicorn and Horse” theme, I mixed in this oversized unicorn print along with these horse statues. Plus her pink lamps can serve as night lights for her.
I also painted over her deep aqua walls with a new, paler aqua, called “Sweet Dreams” by Benjamin Moore. I love how it immediately softened up her bedroom!
Adding In Grown Up Touches to a Girl’s Bedroom Decor
While I wanted her bedroom design to be sweet and youthful (she is seven and my baby….I want to keep her young forever!), I did want to add a couple more “grown up” elements to it. Her pink sofa and scalloped light fixture were elements I would easily use for a teenage girl’s bedroom. But I also wanted to go a little more sophisticated with her area rug. I loved this subtly patterned pink and gold rug from Rugs USA. Plus it gives her a soft and comfy place to play on her floor.
And here it is with the rest of baby girl’s bedroom:
And speaking of floor…one of the big changes we made to the bedroom was switching out the flooring. The previous homeowners had white wool carpeting that my children quickly destroyed. We definitely aren’t a “white carpet” kind of family. So instead we added this vinyl plank floor from Mohawk Flooring. It has been a God send-it is durable, easy to clean, and when spills happen I can simply wipe it up.

A Big Old Thank-you
A huge thanks to all of my sponsors who helped make this sweet little girl’s bedroom makeover happen! These are all companies I love and have worked with in the past, so I was thrilled to work with them on my very own home project:
Wayfair Rugs USA Ramen Hands HANDy Paint Products
And another big thank-you to Aly May Photography for photographing this entire bedroom makeover. On the day she came to shoot the bedroom, there was a big rainstorm with cloudy skies, so she worked her magic with the little natural lighting she had!
And finally, a huge thank-you to Linda at Calling It Home. She is the mastermind behind One Room Challenge. Be sure to check out the hundreds of other designs that are also being revealed this week right here at One Room Challenge.
