My Fall Front Porch Decor
One thing the Midwest has going for it, is some gorgeous fall weather! So here in Michigan, we all love the cool, cozy weather (and try to forget about the brutal winters coming next) and we enjoy every moment of it we can. And in my house that involves an annual trip to the pumpkin patch. We take the hayride out to the field, drag our pumpkins back, and then gorge on apple cider. I only have one rule with my three kids: you must be able to carry your own pumpkin back!
But once I lugged all of my pumpkins back home…something was missing. My front porch still looked empty, despite the influx of new gourds. So I jumped on over to Wayfair and found this adorable Front Door Mat with some Halloween flair. Isn’t it sweet?
I’ll be honest-I don’t go crazy when it comes to decorating for the holidays. To me, less is more. And when I can decorate with nature, I’ll do that every time. So I loaded up my front porch with pumpkins and filled my planter with some fall foliage. And a simple fall wreath finished off the look for my front porch decor.
Super Simple Fall Front Porch Decor
If you search Pinterest you will find oodles of super fancy front porch decor-which is gorgeous. But I’m a busy working Mama of three, so I don’t have hours for shopping and styling my front porch. So if you are like me and want something fun but easy, here are my three tips for decorating your front porch for the fall:
Front Porch Decor Tip #1: Grab a cute front door mat. It is practical, simple, and can add color or texture to your front porch. You can grab the one I used right HERE
Front Porch Decor Tip #2: Use just one container. For me, I use the same planter year round. In the fall I add fall foliage, in the summer I pop in colorful flowers, and in the winter I fill it with evergreens and pine cones. I don’t have a green thumb, so the idea of add a multitude of plantings is overwhelming.
Instead, I use one planter and fill it with only three items. Have you ever heard the phrase: “a thriller, a filler, and a spiller”? I add one tall “thriller” item, one “spiller” plant that flows over the side, and a “filler” to fill in the gaps
Front Porch Decor Tip #3: Use your backyard. What’s a better way to decorate for the season, than to use what is already there? I used the pumpkins from our annual pumpkin patch trip, added foliage from my front yard into the planter, and then literally used fallen leaves from my front yard! For pumpkins, I love grabbing a unique mix of colors and sizes, then I just pile them into a couple of casual groups.
Fall Decor…For the Deer?
After I bought my front door mat, I wanted to share it with y’all, so I grabbed a cup of coffee and my phone, and went out barefoot to my front door. I played around with the pumpkin groupings, filled in my planter with some fall foliage, and started snapping away. Later that afternoon I heard a rustling noise outside my door and about a third of my pumpkins had met a sad death-to the local deer! They were scattered all over the walkway and pumpkin seeds strewn about. So I guess I provided a little smorgasboard for those guys. You’re welcome.
